How do I add page numbers to a PDF for free?

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

Can I start numbering from a number other than 1?

Yes. Set any start number and the first page takes that value, with each following page incrementing by one. This is useful when a document is one section of a larger compilation, or when the first few pages are front matter that should not be counted.

What number formats are supported?

Three: plain Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3), lowercase Roman numerals (i, ii, iii) for front matter like prefaces and tables of contents, and a Page X of N format that shows both the current page and the last number. Pick whichever matches the document convention you need.

Where on the page do the numbers appear?

You choose. Vertical position is top or bottom, and horizontal position is left, center, or right, giving six placements. Numbers sit 36 points (half an inch) in from the edges so they clear most printer margins and binding.

Will adding page numbers change my existing content?

No. The tool only draws text on top of each page; it does not re-flow, compress, or alter the original content streams. The output is the same document with a number added in the margin of every page.
