Why can't I open AVIF files on Windows?
Windows 10 and 11 require the AV1 Video Extension (free from the Microsoft Store) to open AVIF files in the Photos app. Without it, AVIF appears as an unsupported file. Converting to JPG works everywhere without any extension.
Does converting AVIF to JPG lose quality?
Some quality is always lost when decoding a compressed format and re-encoding to a lossy format like JPG. At quality 80 or higher, the difference is not visible on screen for typical photos.
