How does PDF to JPG work in the browser?

pdf.js loads the PDF and renders each page onto an HTML canvas at the scale you pick. The canvas is then encoded as a JPG using the browser's native toBlob API at the quality you pick. Multi-page PDFs are packaged into a ZIP via JSZip. Everything runs locally — your PDF never leaves the tab.

What quality should I pick?

92% is the default and works for almost every use case — sharp output, much smaller files than 100%. Drop to 80% if you need lighter files to attach in email or chat. Push to 95-100% only when you'll print the JPGs or run OCR on them; anything past 95% mostly just inflates file size.

What does the scale option do?

Scale controls the render resolution before encoding. 1x is roughly 96 dpi (web preview). 2x is retina-sharp (~192 dpi) and is the right default for screen viewing on modern devices. 3x is print-quality (~288 dpi) and is worth it only if you'll print the images or zoom in heavily.

Does it work with Aadhaar, Form 16, or other Indian government PDFs?

Yes. Government forms in India are commonly distributed as PDFs but uploaded to portals or shared on WhatsApp as JPGs. Convert your Aadhaar, PAN, Form 16, or bank statement here — the file is rendered in your browser and never uploaded. The 1-page shortcut downloads a single JPG instead of a ZIP for the common case.

Is the PDF uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser. pdf.js parses the PDF, your device's GPU/CPU renders the pages, and JSZip builds the ZIP — all client-side. Close the tab and the file is gone from memory. There's no server-side processing, no temporary upload, no third-party API call.

How big can the PDF be?

There's no hard limit, but very large PDFs (200 MB+) or PDFs with hundreds of pages may run slowly on older laptops or phones because every page renders into memory. For huge documents, drop the scale to 1x and the quality to 80% — that cuts memory pressure significantly without losing usable detail.

JPG is smaller and is what most upload portals accept. PNG is lossless but produces files 3-10x larger for the same source. If you need PNG, use the extract-images-from-pdf tool to pull embedded images byte-for-byte, or open a feature request for PDF-to-PNG.
